NEWS: Disney Announces New Feature to Make Dining Easier

Making advanced dining reservations is one of those tips that we always recommend. Sometimes, finding availability when searching using the My Disney Experience app or website can be difficult. Thankfully, Disney has announced a new feature that will make finding openings much easier! Learn more below.

Here are all the details from Disney Cast Member Josh Higgins:

If you’re a Disney Eats foodie fan like me or just looking to ace your next trip to Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort, then you’ll want to see today’s three easy, time-saving Disney dining tips – including one BRAND NEW way to simplify your dining plans.

We’ve continued to listen to your feedback, and this year, we are making improvements and updates you won’t want to miss for things like making and viewing dining reservations, mobile ordering and more. Here’s how to get the most out of your next visit:

COMING SOON! Search for Dining Availability for Multiple Days

Soon, you will also be able to see dining availability for MULTIPLE days at a time. With a single search, you can view available dining reservations for any given restaurant for up to 10 days at a time. It will make scheduling dining reservations for your entire vacation much easier!

Pro tips:

    • At Walt Disney World, guests staying at a Disney Resorts Collection hotel can make reservations 60 days prior to arrival for their entire length of stay (for up to a 10-night stay). This can help you enjoy streamlined vacation planning by making all your reservations on the same day rather than checking availability day after day.
    • Guests of the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort have preferred access to a limited number of reservations to dine at select Disneyland Resort hotel table-service restaurants during their stay.  Guests should make sure to link their Disneyland Resort hotel confirmation to their Disneyland.com account to be eligible for the benefit!

If your plans change at the last minute, don’t fret. With an update we made last year, you can change or cancel up to two hours before your scheduled reservation at most Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort locations. Keep in mind, some locations may vary so check your restaurant’s dining policy ahead of your visit.

Discover Dining Reservation Availability More Easily

You can now see all available reservation time slots at a restaurant for the entire day on DisneyWorld.com, Disneyland.com, and the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps. Reservations are sorted by breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, so you can easily choose a time based on the menu you’d like to enjoy.

Find Quick and Nearby Foods with Mobile Order

If quick service is more your speed, recent mobile order updates make it even easier to find and order food whenever hunger strikes.

You can sort the list to see which mobile order locations are close by and offer the earliest available pickup times in the app. If you’re walking around Sunset Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you can easily order from nearby locations like Rosie’s All-American Café!

There’s much to be excited about at Disney Parks right now – especially when it comes to food! As we continue to focus on simplifying your experience, we have made additional updates to the My Disney Experience and Disneyland app navigation menus that make the services and features you need during your visit – like ordering food and making a dining reservation – easier to find and access. If you’re feeling hungry, head to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to download the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps, so you can plan your dream dining experience.* Already have the app? Make sure it’s up-to-date for the latest features.

*Apple, the Apple logo, are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Google Play is a trademark of Google Inc. Message, data and roaming rates may apply. Availability subject to handset limitations, and features may vary by handset, service provider or otherwise. Coverage and app stores not available everywhere. Separate terms and conditions apply. If you’re under 18, get your parents’ permission first. Some features require separate theme park admission.

by Matt and Kim

Food. It fuels us, makes us happy, makes us sleepy, sometimes grumpy, occasionally sneezy, rarely bashful, and if we eat too much, we need to see a doc because we’re dopey. What better place to experience multiple continents’ worth of cuisine than Disney World? During our extended vacations, we make a point to try new restaurants and plan ahead, and we’re usually the crazy ones on the computer at 6 am, 60 days before our check-in date, to book our dining reservations. We’ve done Disney on a budget and as if we were able to ‘make it rain’ with more than nickels. Here are some of our favorite tips on saving money while dining at Disney World.

1 – Breakfast

It’s the day’s most important meal, and we must admit we are breakfast people. If Disney offered a breakfast buffet for dinner, we’d never have to try for Be Our Guest again! We have two ‘schools of thought’ when it comes to breakfast, and either one could save you money if you do it correctly—first, breakfast in the room. Lately, our trips have consisted of more late nights and table service dinners, so we like to save time and money by bringing our own breakfast foods for the room. A quick bowl of cereal, a breakfast bar or shake, or that pizza you couldn’t finish the night before are all acceptable ways to save money on dining during your visit. We plan far enough ahead to bring extra plates/plastic silverware to accommodate our meals in the room, so it has become a normal addition to our packing list. Side note: if you book a one-bedroom or larger room, most of them come with a full kitchen. You can elect to cook in the room a night or two to save money if you aren’t planning on a late night at the park. Ok, back to breakfast… the other option we have undertaken is to eat a large breakfast – such as a buffet – and skip lunch for that day. There are plenty of snacks you can pick up in the middle of the afternoon if you need something to tide yourself over before dinner or you can pack your bag with a few snacks from home.  Our favorites have been the snack packs of crackers or cookies, granola bars, and gummy snacks. Often, if we’re feeling froggy, we will make an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast reservation, and we usually aren’t hungry again until dinner.

2 – Check out Menus Ahead of Time

It has happened to us many times – we want to try a new restaurant because we’ve heard great things about it and neglect to review the menu before going. We rely a lot on other people’s recommendations and sometimes arrive to see the menu prices a little too late. All menus are posted on the Disney World website, so we really have no excuse. Learn from us – just because it’s a burger place doesn’t mean it won’t be a $23 burger place at Disney! It will surely be delicious, but you’ll quickly forget how good it tasted a month later when the credit card bill comes!

3 – Bring Your Own Lunch

We have not tried this one, but other family members save money by bringing sandwiches to the park for a lunch break. It isn’t exactly ‘Disney dining,’ but it is a way to save money while dining at Disney. You can bring a cooler bag to pack your lunch, and you could rent a locker to store it and come back when needed, or carry it with you throughout the day – in case that line gets a little too long!

4 – BYO Drink

We find it difficult to pay over five dollars for a drink at a restaurant when it’s so much cheaper at home! We often order water at a table service restaurant and bring our own flavoring (Crystal Light is our mix of choice!) or just enjoy a refreshing glass of ice water. At Quick-Service locations, in particular, we have a bottle of water handy for each member of our family and can add a powdered single of crystal light, or you can ask for a cup of water for free!

5 – Don’t Order That Side!

Did you know that you are not required to order a complete meal deal at the quick service locations? If you simply want the cheeseburger or the sandwich without the fries, you don’t have to pay for the whole meal combo!  This comes in handy when you combine it with the ‘bring your own snacks’ tip! You can have your sandwich, bring some goldfish, and even a pack of cookies for dessert!

6 – Just Not That Hungry?

Kids Meals. You can order them for adults at any quick-service restaurant and most table-service locations. We’ve never been questioned, even at the sit-down restaurants, if one of us just doesn’t want the full adult-sized meal. Also, many of the kid meals come with dessert, but, similar to the tip above, you will not be charged if you don’t order it. Often our little one would be full-on her mac & cheese, so we didn’t need to order the Mickey sundae. We would usually share a dessert later in the day among the three of us…..although, now that there are four of us, we might rethink the sharing of desserts!

7 – Discount Cards/Programs

There are some great benefits to being Annual Passholders or Disney Vacation Club members. With the Annual Pass or Disney Vacation Club card, most participating (table service) restaurants offer 10% off the meal. While it isn’t earth-shattering, it adds up over a week’s vacation!

These are just a few tips on saving money while dining at Disney. We know that everyone ‘does Disney’ just a little differently, so – how do YOU save money on dining?
