NEWS: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway Now Open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Those true originals, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, hosted a spectacular gala premiere Tuesday night in honor of their new attraction, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The new attraction opened to the public on Wednesday, March 4, at Disney’s Hollywood. We were there on Tuesday for a media preview and had a chance to check out the attraction and loved it. 1 – Mickey – A Star is Born

When Mickey Mouse burst upon the silver screen in 1928 as the star of “Steamboat Willie,” he changed the world of entertainment forever. With his childlike innocence, mischievous sense of humor and courageous attitude, Mickey is adored the world over and has become a cultural icon synonymous with Disney. It’s hard to believe that through all of his many adventures, there’s one thing Mickey has never done: starred in his own ride-through attraction in a Disney theme park. That’s changed now with the debut of the fun attraction starring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

2 – Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

In this bold and innovative new family adventure, you’ll burst through a movie screen and into the whimsical world of Disney Television Animation’s Emmy Award®-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts, where “mouse rules apply” and anything can – and does – happen! With an original “Mickey Mouse” story by Walt Disney Imagineering featuring the new song “Nothing Can Stop Us Now,” Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is a celebration of Disney heritage and a showcase for state-of-the-art storytelling and attraction design.

We have a whole lot to say about this attraction and our full review is coming very shortly. For now, know that we absolutely loved this attraction and believe the Imagineers have done an incredible job. The theming, music, technology, and our beloved characters all come together perfectly. We’ve heard an overwhelmingly positive response to the ride and are confident that this will be an extremely popular attraction for guests of all ages!

3 – Grand Opening Ceremony

Tuesday evening we were there to witness the grand opening ceremony. Flanked by their Disney pals – including Walt Disney World Resort President Josh D’Amaro – Mickey and Minnie welcomed guests to a musical celebration nearly a century in the making, punctuated by fireworks, dancing and, most of all … fun.

“Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is a crowning achievement in the multiyear transformation of Disney’s Hollywood Studios,” D’Amaro said. “What was once a theme park that took you behind the scenes, now puts you in the center of your favorite stories.”

The ceremony was fun and energetic, and it was great to see the marquee light up!

4 – Opening Day Success!

The attraction opened to the public on Wednesday, March 4. Guests started arriving as early as 4:00 am in the morning to line up for the attraction. When the park opened at 8:00 am, the wait time for the standby queue quickly shot up to 5 hours! Thankfully, as the day progressed the wait time dropped to 3 hours by mid-morning. After that wait time ranged anywhere from 90 minutes up to 3 hours. We expect wait times to be the highest in the morning since the park is so crowded for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance boarding groups and to taper off by lunchtime. This attraction should be your top Tier 1 FastPass pick!

5 – New Merchandise Collection

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is the inspiration for a new line of fun Disney products evoking the attraction’s lighthearted spirit.

They include:

• A whistle that re-creates the sound made by the Runnamuck Railroad locomotive
• A pull-back toy of the Runnamuck Railroad locomotive and ride vehicle
• A mug in the shape of the Runnamuck Railroad locomotive
• A light-up glow spinner featuring Mickey and Minnie that plays the attraction’s theme song, “Nothing Can Stop Us Now”
• A MagicBand featuring Mickey, Minnie and the attraction logo
• An assortment of apparel and pins themed to the attraction
• A new Wishables collection featuring Mickey and Minnie, Engineer Goofy, Chuuby and more.

Also debuting in conjunction with Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is the latest headwear design from the Disney Parks Designer Collection. Imagineer Kevin Rafferty designed the piece featuring Mickey and Minnie in the setting of their newest cartoon from the attraction, “Perfect Picnic.” Launched in May 2019, the Disney Parks Designer Collection is a series of limited-release Mickey ear hats and Minnie ear headbands designed by notable celebrities and artists.

5 – Mickey & Minnie Trivia Time – Mouse Rules Apply! In the Play Disney Parks App

The Play Disney Parks mobile app now features a new trivia game in celebration of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the new Mickey Shorts Theater (also opening March 4, 2020, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios). Mickey & Minnie’s Trivia Time – Mouse Rules Apply! gives guests the chance to play together and test their knowledge of Mickey and friends, featuring animations inspired by the “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts.

Guests playing the game discover five trivia packs containing hundreds of questions – from “Steamboat Willie” all the way to today. Some of these trivia packs are available prior to arriving at the attraction to help guests prepare for their journey into Mickey & Minnie’s cartoon world, while others can be unlocked after experiencing Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, extending the fun.

Guests can also earn special new digital achievements in the app, including the “Runner-Away” achievement at Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the “Short Stuff” achievement at Mickey Shorts Theater.

6 – Mickey Shorts Theater – Now Open

The newly reimagined Mickey Shorts Theater also debuted on March 4, 2020, with a one-of-a- kind animated short featuring Mickey and Minnie, “Vacation Fun,” celebrating those true originals’ favorite vacation memories, plus a few new adventures. “Vacation Fun” is exclusive to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and includes new animation as well as clips from favorite “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts. The show was a whole lot of fun and the theater is adorable. It’s well worth a stop inside to see this cute Mickey Short.

After the show, you can make even more memories by stepping into life-sized versions of beloved animated “Mickey Mouse” shorts, where you can pose for photos with family and friends.
